Duplicate

Literally, to make a copy of. It is not the same as understand. For example, if someone said "sideways elephant 43" you could easily duplicate it, but would not easily understand it (here, it's a meaningless phrase).
It is necessary to duplicate something before one can understand it. To duplicate something requires active involvement.
